Dr. Davis offers two equally effective teeth whitening methods. With the Pola Advanced Tooth Whitening System, you can choose in-office or at-home whitening. Some people want to whiten their teeth at home on their own schedule, and some are willing to pay a bit more to have their whitening done in the dental office. So we offer both Pola Office and Pola Night. And Dr. Davis will begin with a complete exam and cleaning to make sure your teeth don’t have any cracks or leaky fillings to interfere with the whitening process.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Our teeth come in with their own natural shade of white. The pigment is in the dentin layer underneath the translucent enamel. Through the course of our lives, highly pigmented foods and substances like coffee, tea, and tobacco stain our teeth. While brushing removes superficial stains, these substances will seep into the teeth through the enamel to lodge in the dentin. Professional tooth whitening products contain peroxide that seeps into your teeth, oxidizing the pigment and whitening your teeth.
In-Office vs. Take-Home Whitening
If you opt for in-office whitening, we will apply the Pola Office peroxide solution to your teeth. It breaks down and releases the peroxide ions very quickly, so it doesn’t need an activating light the way some other in-office whiteners do. Within 30 minutes, your teeth will be whiter. The number of sessions you choose will depend on how white you want your teeth to be. And because new stains will accumulate over time, you’ll want to plan on touch-ups down the line.
If you choose the take-home method, we will take an impression of your teeth to create a custom-fit set of whitening trays for you, as shown to the right. Then you’ll put a prescribed amount of the whitening gel in the trays and wear them each night. You’ll notice a big difference within a couple of weeks, and you can continue to whiten them until they’re as white as you would like.
What About Over-the-Counter Products?
Because they are meant to be used without the supervision of a dentist, over-the-counter products like whitening strips have to contain a much lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide, so they aren’t very effective. And toothpastes will only remove surface stains. They simply aren’t on your teeth long enough to seep through the enamel and reach the dentin.
