Holistic medicine is a system that treats the whole person, rather than just the parts. So taking a holistic approach to dentistry means being mindful of the connection between our teeth and mouths and our overall well-being. According to a representative of the New York Department of Health, “Oral health and general health are inseparable. Diseases and conditions of the mouth have a direct impact on the health of the entire body.” With that in mind, Dr. Davis takes a holistic approach that includes white composite fillings and sanitary amalgam removal. Read on to find out what this means for you.
White Composite Fillings
More and more, we are educating ourselves about the effects of what we put in our bodies, and as white composite fillings have become available, many patients are choosing them over the old silver amalgam fillings. This older type of filling is actually made up of about 50 percent mercury, and even though the American Dental Association maintains that they are safe, many people are choosing the newer white composite fillings rather than having mercury in their own or their children’s mouths.
Many people are also concerned with possible sensitivity reactions to metals. A large proportion of the population, for example, is allergic to nickel, a metal that is used in many dental alloys. Other dental metals such as chromium and beryllium are also of concern. But with today’s advanced ceramics and other materials, many procedures, such as crowns, bridges, and partial dentures, that used to require the use of metal can now be done metal-free. Dr. Davis uses these advanced ceramics and provides metal-free dentistry.
Sanitary Amalgam Removal
Sometimes the old silver and mercury amalgam fillings need to be replaced. Removing them can release mercury into the mouth where it can be ingested, and into the air, where it can be breathed in. Sanitary amalgam removal makes use of tooth isolation and high volume suction to prevent the swallowing of any mercury as the amalgam is removed.
